Plan to Dehydrate
Last week I focused on how to prep for #thedryyear, and it got me thinking about the amount of preparation I used to put into drinking. If I knew I was going to have a big night out, I’d get errands and chores done in advance, recognizing my likely hangover to leave me on the couch versus doing laundry. I’d buy Party Patches to lessen the effects of a night of heavy drinking, snacks to ‘soak up the alcohol’ and I’d also buy Pedialyte for the morning after.
I was at the grocery last week and for the first time, the Pedialyte display outside of the liquor section jumped out at me as wildly inappropriate. I’ve walked past, and shopped from, this display hundreds of times, but drying out does interesting things to perception. I did a bit of research, and discovered that Pedialyte has been marketed as a hangover relief tool since 2015. Their social media accounts cover re-hydration
for athletes, and recovery from heat exhaustion, but buried in between those types of posts are ‘party-protection offered via Pedialyte’ type posts as well. So, why did I react negatively to Pedialyte placement in the liquor aisle? I think it's the idea that I grew up with this brand that’s now promoting solutions to partying hard.
However, I’m not blasting Pedialyte, I applaud their transition into a new market. I’m just starting to notice the brand -level normalization of alcohol’s negative impact on our bodies, and it is starting to bother me. Alcohol affects everyone differently, but dehydration, “booze blues” and hormonal impacts are all common side-effects of over indulging. So, I reflect on how I might have monitored my drinking more, or avoided drinking certain nights altogether if it weren’t for my handy pre-drink planning brought to me by hangover cures. I take full responsibility for my actions and decisions, but next time I go to the grocery I’ll happily grab my electrolytes from the non-alcoholic drinks aisle.
